The Mercury 7 astronauts signed ''The 1962 World Book'', documenting the events of 1961 when Alan Shepard became the first American to travel to space. Shepard signs on page 52 in blue ballpoint, ''To Jack Collins Jr / with warmest regards / Alan B. Shepard / 12/29/62'', with Shepard's wife Louise signing on the opposite page. The other six astronauts sign on page 59, which shows the men looking on as Shepard receives the NASA Distinguished Service Medal from President Kennedy. Signed ''Scott Carpenter'', ''Gus Grissom'', ''Gordon Gooper'', ''WM Schirra'', ''JA Glenn, Jr.'' and ''DK Slayton''. Signed in fine black felt-tip by Carpenter and Grissom, black ballpoint by Cooper and Glenn, and blue ballpoint by Schirra and Slayton. An inscription to Jack Collins appears on page 58, also by Shepard who lived in the Houston condominium building that Collins managed. With faint pencil writing next to each of their names. Book measures 7.5'' x 10'' and runs 635pp. Ownership inscription of Collins to front pastedown. Cracking to leather binding and a stray crayon mark to back cover, otherwise in very good condition.
