Marcel Proust autograph letter signed, written sometime after 15 November 1911 to Max Daireaux, a fellow writer whom he had met two years earlier in Cabourg, France; Cabourg was the inspiration for the resort town of Balbec in Proust's novel ''In Search of Lost Time''. In this two page letter, Proust praises Daireaux's novel ''Timon et Zozo'', in full: ''Dear friend / I am in too much pain to write to you. But how lovely this is! It constantly makes you laugh, sometimes cry. The image of an invisible person's hair to represent the sun is charming. [The wordplay with] auteur and hauteur is excellent. But isn't 'with coldness' the same as 'with disdain'? / Best wishes with congratulations and fatigue. / Marcel / 'not rashly, but with all his heart, which was huge for him' makes no sense. But all the rest does, and is so fine and strong that one could make a collection of 'thoughts' from Timon et Zozo that would be quite extraordinary.'' Two page letter in black ink on card-style bifolium stationery measures 8.75'' x 6.75'' unfolded. Letter has been documented in Kolb's archive of Proust letters, Vol. X, number 189. Fold, else near fine.
