B-57 nuclear bomb nose cone owned by Major General Charles W. Sweeney, pilot of the WWII Bockscar mission. Bockscar dropped a nuclear bomb during World War II on the city of Nagasaki, Japan on 9 August 1945. Bockscar was the culmination of the Manhattan Project and precipitated the surrender of Japan on 15 August. Nose cone has two plaques affixed to base, the first reading in part, ''509th Composite Group / 50th Anniversary Reunion...Charles W. Sweeney Brigadier General (USAF Retired / Commanding Officer of 'Bockscar'''. Second plaque reads in part, ''This nose cone is a genuine part of a dismantled model B-57 thermonuclear weapon. The fact that this weapon was disarmed and scrapped stands as a testimony to the success in the 'Cold War' by the United Stats. This part is number 095 of 980 which are available as collectors items''. Cone measures 7'' tall and 6.25'' in diameter at the base. Very good condition. With an LOA from General Sweeney's son.
