Lot of two exceptional items signed by Howard Hughes, both associated with his record-breaking Round-the-World Flight in 1938. Lot includes: (1) Howard Hughes signed card, promoting a visit to Chicago by Hughes and his flight crew after their historic Round-the-World Flight in July 1938. Without inscription, card is signed in fountain pen by Howard Hughes, co-pilot Harry Connor, navigator Lt. Tommy Thurlow, engineer Dick Stoddart, mechanic Edward Lund, and flight manager Al Lodwick. Card measures 5'' x 7.675''. Browning at edges, and nearly separated at center with tape repair to verso, otherwise very good condition with bold signatures. (2) Howard Hughes signed 10'' x 8'' photo showing Hughes in his aircraft, inscribed in black fountain pen, ''To Donald Coakley with wishes for the best of luck / Howard Hughes''. Matte photo has paper remnants to verso, and some creasing largely confined to margins. Very good condition. The recipient, Donald Coakley, was a detective with the Chicago Police Department in the 1930s assigned to Security for Hughes when he would visit Chicago. When Hughes and his flight crew visited in July 1938, Coakley acquired their signatures in person. The photo was subsequently mailed to Coakley by flight manager Al Lodwick, whose letter accompanies the lot. Dated 14 August 1943, Lodwick writes, ''Around July 15, 1938, I accompanied Howard Hughes to Chicago after managing his 'round-the-world flight...we were shown every consideration and courtesy...Due to the fact that you had a very important part in making our stay in Chicago an enjoyable one, I thought you might like to have the attached autographed photograph of Howard Hughes, which he has kindly autographed to you...''
