Cache of 19th century documents signed by two U.S. Presidents and Queen Victoria. Lot includes (1) Ulysses S. Grant document signed as President, dated 24 April 1869, appointing Thomas Fitnam as Consul to St. Helena. Measures 20'' x 16''. Heavy staining and tape repair to folds, overall fair condition; (2) Andrew Johnson document signed as President, appointing Fitnam as Consul on 29 November 1865, countersigned by Secretary of State William Seward. Measures 22.5'' x 17.5''. Separation along folds, though no paper loss. Good condition with intact paper seal; (3) Queen Victoria document signed as Queen regarding Fitnam's consul appointment to St. Helena, dated 3 November 1866. Measures 16'' x 12''. Holes at intersecting folds, but overall in very good condition with Queen Victoria's red wax-backed paper seal; (4-5) Two State Department documents from the 1870s signed by Assistant Secretary of State Frederick W. Seward; (6) Letter by Thomas Fitnam to his son, datelined St. Helena on 21 May 1876 from the U.S. Consulate; (7) Interesting U.S. Patent Office document, dated 18 September 1891 awarded to Thomas Fitnam for improvements in Life Preservers.
