Lot of two letters by Joseph Stanley Brown, secretary to President James Garfield, penned on Executive Mansion stationery on 12 July 1881 and 19 August 1881, between President Garfield's shooting and death. In the second letter, Brown refers to Mrs. Garfield, writing in part, ''Your letter...to Mrs. Garfield, together with the copy of The Life and Public Services of the President, was duly received by her, but as she finds it impossible to devote any time or thought to correspondence, she has handed the former to me for reply...J. Stanley Brown / Private Secretary''. In addition to serving as Garfield's secretary, Brown would later marry James Garfield's daughter, Mary. Single page bifolium letters measure 5.5'' x 8.75'' and 5.5'' x 9''. Folds and light wear, with foxing to second letter. Very good condition.
