Dwight D. Eisenhower typed letter signed post-Presidency, dated 27 September 1966 on his personal letterhead. Here, Eisenhower writes to his brother Edgar on his foreign relations policies as President: ''...My opinion of Bonner Fellers is not such as to encourage me to make any deep study of his convictions. However, I do admit that here and there he does refer to facts that have been long known. It is easy indeed to appeal to any people who are anxious, as all of us rightfully are, to reduce governmental expenditures. Admitting that all kinds of mistakes and blunders have been made in the administration of the foreign aid program over the years I just wonder what people think would be the situation of the United States today if we had never undertaken the policy of helping other nations. Certainly Iran and Greece would have been long since under Communist domination, while western Europe, if not in the same position, would be cut up in a checkerboard of Communist and non-Communist nations. Central America would be gone and all of Southeast Asia. Without going further into such speculative factors I can say this with complete confidence as to my convictions: without those expenditures we would be in a far more dangerous position than we are today and spending very much more money for so-called 'security.' Anyway, I will be glad to talk to you about it when we meet on the twenty-ninth. Devotedly,'' and then signed ''Ike E'' boldly in black ink. Letter on one page measures 7'' x 10.25'' with two holes punched at top, else fine condition.
