Dwight D. Eisenhower typed letter signed ''D.E.'', dated 30 January 1956, on personalized White House stationery. Letter, written to older brother Edgar N. Eisenhower, details the President's grave concerns over the proposed Bricker Amendment. Reads in part: ''...After reading your letter, I readily admit that the last sentence of mine of January eighteenth was unfortunately worded. Certainly I had not thought of charging you, as you put it, with putting a dollar sign on your Americanism. I meant only to say that the lawyers who have come to me about this particular amendment seem to be in the 'corporation' category, rather than those serving in various legal positions throughout our government, where, in my opinion, they get a better understanding of the reason for the particular Constitutional differences between the Executive and the Legislative...In foreign affairs, America must as a unit, and in this one field, the Constitution framers were indeed careful to make that clear...You say you are disturbed that so many people don't readily concur with your views on this matter. As you can see, I differ emphatically. I happen to be sworn to defend with my life the Constitution of the United States. This I will do, and I am not going to destroy that Constitution through some false idea of protecting it...'' Two page letter, measuring 7.25'' x 10.25'', has expected folds from mailing and two punched holes at top. Near fine.
