Dwight D. Eisenhower typed letter signed, dated 8 March 1943 on ''Allied Force Headquarters'' stationery. Here, Eisenhower writes to his brother Edgar discussing the removal of the Axis in Africa, among other WWII topics: ''...Our finance people report that there is no immediate need in the local financial set-up for another captain, so I have little excuse for asking specifically for Capt. Combs. Actually I make it almost a religion to avoid asking for individual officers, except in the highest positions -- to pursue an opposite policy merely throws personnel machinery into a snarl, and since the War Department has to keep track of millions of individuals, you can see what is implied. But I suspect that if he really wants foreign service he will not be long in getting it -- we seem to have troops in almost every corner of the earth. From what I hear from home our situation here is reported regularly in the papers, so I suppose you have a good idea of how things are going. I am confident, completely. Political questions are not plaguing me as much as formerly (at least at the moment). It is too bad that such matters can not be reported accurately and on the basis of realism but, speaking generally, only through the eyes of ignorance and prejudice. However, we're going to clear the Axis out of Africa -- and that's something!'' Signed simply ''Dwight'' in black ink. Letter measures 8'' x 10.25'' on one page. Near fine.
