'The Gentleman's Magazine'' comprising 117 volumes of the London magazine covering events from around the world, particularly in the American colonies, with numerous fold-out maps in almost all volumes. London: various publishers, 1731-1840. Founded and edited by Edward Cave under the pseudonym Sylvanus Urban, ''The Gentleman's Magazine'' was the first successful publication to cover a wide range of topics - from literature and the arts to science, politics and world geography. Most notably, the magazine (the first time a periodical had been named as such, previously meaning ''storehouse''), included highly detailed fold-out maps and engravings, likely totaling near 500 in all 117 volumes presented here.

In addition to the maps of America and the world, volumes also contained engravings such as a human heart, architecture, and various animals found in the Americas and elsewhere. The poem, ''On Recollection'' by the enslaved poet Phillis Wheatley is notable in the 1773 volume, the same year that Wheatley's only book of poetry was published. A wealth of information presented both textually and visually, immersing the reader in the world as it was then, from a time of feudalism to the French and American Revolutions to the Industrial Age.

A complete list of volumes is included below, as well as the list of maps (a few maps have been excised but the vast majority are present). All volumes are first editions with the exception of 1731 which is a second edition. Volumes are rebound in various styles. Light dampstaining and foxing. The covers of a few volumes are detached, and the 1763 volume suffers from water damage. Most volumes are in very good or very good plus condition.

Additional maps and engravings can be found here.

Volumes include the following. Note that from 1731-1788 the year was complete in one volume. From 1789 on, each year was contained in two volumes (this list has both volumes for those years unless otherwise noted).
