Scarce first edition, first printing of Mark Twain's American masterpiece, ''Adventures of Tom Sawyer'' in publisher's blue cloth with gilt accents, and profusely illustrated in text throughout. Hartford: The American Publishing Co., 1876. With first printing points present, namely ''THE'' on half-title page in 10-point font, rather than 14-point, considered the definitive first printing point. Also with flyleaves in triplicate, blank versos for half-title and frontispiece, four pages of advertisements in back with revised date of 1 December 1876 as called for, and pale peach endpapers. Measures 7'' x 8.75''. Unrestored book displays well, with some shelf wear and fraying to board edges, previous owner's name inked to flyleaf, small closed tear to front free endpaper and separation starting to rear hinge. Overall in very good condition, much nicer than usually found with gilt still bright. A hallmark of American literature.
