Jar of Trinitite from the Trinity Test on 16 July 1945, the first detonation of a nuclear weapon, and the only such test before the bombing of Hiroshima three weeks later. Jar contains hundreds of pieces, ranging in size from 1 x 1 x 1 mm. to 26 x 17 x 3 mm, collected after the explosion by an eyewitness. Trinitite has a glassy surface, usually found in shades of green, and was formed by the atomic blast melting sand found at the test site near Alamogordo, New Mexico. Most of the Trinitite at the site was bulldozed away with collections such as this relatively rare. As the atomic energy released by the Trinity bomb was low, comprising a few dozen kilograms of uranium, Trinitite is considered safe to handle. Jar measures 3.5'' x 2.75''. With Sotheby's provenance.
