Thomas Edison autograph letter signed regarding the peculiarities of conducting electricity through wire. Dated 5 February 1898, Edison writes to Frank L. Perry of ''Western Electrician'' magazine, marking the letter as ''Personal''. This year was pivotal for Edison: after inventing a commercial method for electric lighting in 1879, he was tied up in patent battles for nearly a decade before the court ruled in October 1898 that his original patent was valid. Widespread adoption of electrical lighting in homes wouldn't happen for another 25 years however. Letter reads in full,
''Frank L Perry Esq / Dear Sir- / The most curious thing in the electrical line that I know of is the instantaneous control of mechanism at a distance over a wire by currents extremely weak, when passed through a cylinder of compressed Calcium Phosphate upon which the electrodes rest. / Yours / Thomas A. Edison''.
Single page letter on stationery of Edison's company, New Jersey and Pennsylvania Concentrating Works, measures 8'' x 10''. Folds and light creasing, a few pinholes and corner tape pieces on verso. Overall in very good condition.
