Theodore Roosevelt autograph letter signed, dated 6 January 1917 shortly after the 1916 Presidential election, referenced by Roosevelt here. Declining the Progressive's nomination to lead the party in the election, Roosevelt campaigned for Republican Charles Hughes, who lost in a close finish to Democrat Woodrow Wilson. On Sagamore Hill stationery, letter reads in full,

''Dear Arthur, / If I would accept any invitation, my dear fellow, it would be yours; I really wish I could do so. But it just is not possible, I am driven to death in the effort to get through my work - and I sometimes fail anyhow; I last refused over 300 invitations to speak since election day. / With real regret, and hearty good wishes, I am / faithfully yours / Theodore Roosevelt''.

Single page letter is penned by Roosevelt in black fountain pen. Measures 5.75'' x 7.625'' on bifolium stationery. Single fold, paperclip impression, light toning and creasing. Overall in very good condition. From the Malcolm S. Forbes collection.
