James Madison military appointment signed as President on 18 June 1812, the very same day that Madison also signed the declaration of war for the War of 1812, a conflict that would result in the burning of the White House. Madison here appoints John W. Graham as Midshipman in the U.S. Navy. Signed ''James Madison'' at lower right and countersigned by Naval Secretary Paul Hamilton. With blind-stamped seal of the U.S. Navy at top left. Vellum document measures approximately 12.75'' x 8.25''. Taped to mat along edges on verso. Folded into fourths. Overall in very good plus condition.
