Dwight Eisenhower autograph letter signed as Lt. General and Commander of the European Theatre of Operations. In his letter, sent 12 October 1942 to his wife Mamie, Eisenhower writes of an article about him in the ''Saturday Evening Post'' called ''America's Favorite General''. The letter reads: ''Darling: Lee says that a pouch closes soon. This cannot be much of a note because everyone in sight is apparently trying to see me. But when I know that a message can get off to you quickly I always hate to lose the opportunity. I've had no further report on [son] John's ear - and I can never quite get the matter out of my mind. I do hope it turns out well. Lately I've written to no one except you. It's just a case of getting so tired of thinking - now what I call thinking, that I recoil from the effort...An advance copy of Sat. Eve Post of 3 Oct just arrived. Has quite an article about me & my family. It's the Demaree Bess article...Love to everybody - and loads to you - always your / Ike''. In the article, Bess points out that Eisenhower advanced through the ranks more rapidly than any other American, and that his skills are as strong in diplomacy as in strategy. Included is the original mailing envelope bearing a 12 October 1942 postmark. 2pp. letter measures 6'' x 9''. Toning and creasing, else near fine.
