First English edition of ''Essayes: Morall, Politike and Millitarie'' by Renaissance philosopher Michel de Montaigne. London: Val. Sims for Edward Blount, 1603. Montaigne popularized the essay as a literary form and inspired scores of 17th century philosophers after him; this translation by Florio is also credited with coining many new English words. Tall quarto measuring 7.5'' x 11'' is bound in modern dark brown calf. Simple blind tooling to front and rear board with raised bands and blind stamped title to spine. Title page and verso are in facsimile, and book also lacks page A4. Otherwise complete and intact, including all other title pages for the second and third books in the volume. Pages A2 and A3 show browning at edges and are slightly brittle with some very minor loss. All other leaves appear bright and clean. Binding is tight and square and internally book is sound with little wear. An attractive copy of this very scarce and important work, in very good plus condition.
