William Shatner handwritten signed recollection regarding his second wife, Nerine Kidd's alcoholism and how his friend Leonard Nimoy -- a recovering alcoholic himself -- helped both him and his wife until she died in a pool accident. Nimoy served as best man at Shatner and Nerine's wedding in 1997. Shatner writes on his personal stationery in full, '''You know she's an alcoholic' said Leonard - 'I know' I said, 'but I love her and it will work' - I know love conquers all. But Leonard knew differently. I had this romantic idea that love can fill any void. I had dogs with severe problems in behavior, recalcitrant horses who were mean - children who were misbehavin [sic] - all of them were helped with copious amounts of love - Surely this wonderful woman could be helped in the same way - But Leonard knew, in his heart, that this might not be possible - But, God bless him, he tried - he took her to AA meetings - we found her a sponsor - and always by my side was my friend Leonard giving advice and counsel - to no avail. He knew the recovery rate of alcoholism is low - a lot of times it ends in tragedy - In his case, when his wife asked him, 'If you love me so much, why are you drinking?' He had no answer - so one day he stopped - he never had another drink - a testament to his discipline and his love for his wife. Because Leonard was nothing if disciplined - maybe to a fault, but it got him through his life - through currents that flowed with tragedy -and upwellings of joy. / William Shatner''. Single page measures 7.25'' x 10.25''. Near fine condition. Also with an LOA by William Shatner.
