Only 3 other medals such as this are known to exist, one awarded to Merritt Sibbald in 1941, one to Scotty Welbourne in 1942, and one to Ernest Bachrach in 1947. Front of medal features iconic Oscar statue in relief, flanked by text: ''ANNUAL STILL PHOTOGRAPHY MEDAL''. Verso reads in full: ''ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS & SCIENCES / FIRST AWARD TO / A.L. WHITEY SCHAFER / FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT / CLASS 8 / 1942''. 2 stars flank ''FIRST AWARD'' at top. Measures 1.75'' in diameter. Weighs 50 g. With an original business card by A.L. Schafer. Light tarnishing and scratching, near fine condition.
