Exceptionally rare autograph letter signed by Sigmund Freud on the subject of dreams, which he devoted an entire book to in, "The Interpretation of Dreams". Composed on his personal stationery on 28 May 1935, letter in German translates to: "Dear Lord[?] / Your letter takes up the question of the real duration of dreams, a question which I have dealt with in detail in my Interpretation of Dreams, and which I have described as at present unsettled. Your opinion, that the dream lasts just as long as a corresponding train of thought in waking, is simple enough…It is based on the observation of your own dreams, in which the stimulus which wakes you up (Weckreiz) has got worked into the dream only at the end. Such dreams are common, and apparently the rule: They raise no difficulty but throw no light on our problem. The real problem is raised by those dreams in which a long drawn out dream seems to depend entirely upon the waking stimulus (Weckreiz) as in the celebrated Guillotine dream on Maury and the Alarmclock dreams of Hildebrandt, which you can re-read in the Intern. of Dreams. I have myself attempted an explanation, for which however I cannot claim a universal application...very devoted / freud". Single page letter has folds and creasing, otherwise near fine. Very scarce.
