Photo album with 11 original photographs documenting the Spanish-American War and life in Cuba at the close of the 19th century. The album starts with a Cuban family of five on a farm and of the Spanish-controlled Fort San Serverino. Following are photos of the 8th Massachusetts Infantry in Georgia taking a train from Americus to Savannah and of the mail team on horse carriages. In Cuba, the 8th Infantry performs a daily drill and prepares for an evening parade. The fort is featured again with close-ups of the historic Spanish buildings. The following pages show American troops boarding a ship headed to Cuba, Cuban Stevedores on a ship dock and American soldiers unloading their horses. One of the most splendid shots is a scenic view of the San Juan River in Matanzas Harbor with a boat and town in the background. A horrific photo in Georgia captures a mob of people tossing a black person into the air. Back in Cuba, additional river scenes are displayed along with a photo of an American ship and pictures of buildings along the Umerica River. Three interesting pictures show splendid architecture in Cuba: the Francisco Restaurant and Arch, a lavish private mansion with Romanesque-style columns and the Court of San Serverino. Shots of a sugar plantation reveal a hut and a farmer pushing a cart with several bags containing sugar along with a picture of the Cuban Cavalry on their horses. The album concludes with photos of the unit in Kentucky and Georgia and captures civilian life in both states. Album contains 11 original prints on glossy photographic paper. The majority of the photos are in very good condition. A few pictures have fading, toning and ink spots. Also includes dozens of interesting copies of photos. The 7.75'' x 5'' album has toning and spotting while the pages are starting to detach from the backstrip, overall in very good condition.
