Oliver Wendell Holmes autograph letter signed ''OW Holmes'' to a Mr. Fields -- likely poet James Thomas Fields. Datelined 31 October from 164 Charles St., Holmes' Boston residence from 1858 to 1870. The physician and author who exposed the cause of puerperal fever writes: ''Got back this morning. Much dilapidated, not improving. Have had a hard time of it with my old enemy, but did Montreal and Quebec pretty thoroughly. I hope to be well enough to be with you on the 6th, which promises to be so pleasant an occasion. Love always / OW Holmes''. Measures 4.5'' x 7'' on card-style stationery. Toning, creasing, and minor foxing to verso, else near fine.
