Letter signed by famed archaeologist Howard Carter in 1903, written in Arabic. Carter is well-known for founding the tomb of King Tutankhamen and served as first chief inspector of the Egyptian Antiquities Service. Translated to English, letter is written during an excavation on the Island of Elephantine, located in the Nile River. With a ''Received on 2 May 1903'' date, letter reads, ''HE Mr., Director of the General Archaeology Directorate, Based on your explanation, dated the 21st of this month, number 966, we inform you that an inspection has been conducted of the building constructed by the father of Hamid Effendi Abdulmunim at the archaeological site on the island of Aswan (Elephantine). We found the amount of 150 Egyptian pounds estimated for the building is a very appropriate and reasonable value...General Archaeology Directorate, South Egypt. The total of 40 pages are back...'' Signed ''Howard Carter'' beneath lines of Arabic. An additional line in English along the bottom reads, ''To s. des. a. Regarding the building of the Island of Aswan''. Single page letter measures 6.75'' x 8.25''. Light toning, holes punched along left side and staple holes in four places to top. Very good condition.
