Dated 19 January 1865, letter from Kent, England on ''Gads Hill Place'' stationery is addressed to one Edward Beal: ''Sir I have only this afternoon received your letter. To this explanation let me add the expression of my regret that my engagements would in any case have prevented my having the honor of presiding at the meeting of last night. Faithfully Yours, / Charles Dickens''. Single-page letter with slim black border measures 4.5'' x 7''. Mounted to paper to an overall size of 4.75'' x 7.25''. Uniform toning, else near fine.
