James A. Garfield letter signed as Republican nominee for President. Dated 6 September 1880, letter is addressed to James A. Stone, Esq. and reads, ''...I have received yours of the fourth instant, inviting me to attend the Agricultural Fair to be held at your place. I regret that my engagements render it impossible for me to accept, but I thank you none the less for your kind invitation. Very Truly Yours, [signed] J. A. Garfield''. Accompanied by the original envelope filled out in his hand. Single-page letter measures 7.5'' x 9.5''. Lamination to front, creasing and discoloration. Very good.
