Rare 1837 Republic of Texas loan note between a James Cole, Isaac Connelly and the lender, well known Lt. Colonel Joseph L. Bennett. Note reads, ''On or before the 11th day of April next we or either of us promise to pay Joseph L. Bennett One hundred and Eleven dollars...1837 / [signed] James Cole / Isaac Connelly''. Bennett was headed for San Antonio to assist in the defense of the Alamo until he learned of its defeat. 6'' x 7.75'' note has expected toning, some light chipping and soiling. Overall very good condition.
