Teletype from New York, dated 9 December 1980, reporting reaction to John Lennon's 8 December shooting death. It reads in part, ''...Outside the New York apartment house where Lennon had lived and where he died, nearly one-thousand fans -- some silent, some weeping, and a few softly singing Beatles songs -- held a somber vigil...a woman...among the crowd...put it best: 'The Beatles' music was like the beginning of our adolescence, and this is the end'...''
