Millard Fillmore autograph letter signed to politician and poet George Lunt, regarding Lunt's anti-Civil War poem, ''The Union.'' Like Fillmore, Lunt preferred compromise over conflict in dealing with slavery, reflected in his poem which Fillmore praises in this letter, written on 25 June 1860 from his home in Buffalo, New York. In part, ''...I beg of you to accept my sincere thanks for the short poem which you were so kind as to send me entitled, 'The Union.' I have perused it with great pleasure and sincerely wish that the fanatic might feel the sting of its sarcasm, and the patriot inhale its spirit...Millard Fillmore''. 1pp. measures 5'' x 7.75'', mounted to a backing sheet to an overall size of 5.5'' x 8''. Loss to lower left corner, very good condition.
