First Lady Julia Tyler autograph letter signed. Here, as John Tyler's widow, she writes to journalist Edward Bok regarding the passing of Henry Ward Beecher. Beecher rose to prominence as a preacher who strongly favored abolition of slavery, and was scandalized for an alleged affair with a married woman twelve years prior to his death. Datelined Richmond, Virginia, 3 June 1887, Tyler's letter to Bok concerns her contribution to Bok's 1887 book, ''Beecher Memorial: Contemporaneous Tributes to the Memory of Henry Ward Beecher.'' She writes, ''I have not been able to answer the kind letter you addressed me as promptly as I wished, owing to my many & various engagements - but I have fulfilled the wishes you expressed as to my writing Mrs. Beecher in her sad bereavement, and I think that you deserve for all the interest that you have exhibited in the distinguished Preacher and his family the kindest recognition of their friends - I did not know the exact residence of Mrs. Beecher but have directed my letter to Brooklyn - Perhaps it would be better form you to enquire whether it is received...Julia Gardiner Tyler''. 2pp. letter on a single sheet of card-style stationery measures 5'' x 8''. Toning and creasing, else near fine.
