Author John Updike signed postcard, addressed to poet Karl Shapiro in NYC, postmarked 7 February 1991. Reads in part: ''...I'm so glad you liked S. [Scarlet Letter Trilogy]...The book felt very creamy and airy and good when I was writing it, so it was a (salubrious) shock when it got slapped on its bangles by critics female and male. Bellow -- our paths have crossed a few times. He was courteous buy wary...he comes across rather carefully closed. Saving himself, like girls used to in the 40s and 50s...'' Signed ''John'' in blue ink with additional line edits in his hand. Postcard measures 5.5'' x 3.5'' with Updike's name and return address in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts printed. Near fine condition.
