The Nobel Laureate author inscribes the front free endpaper: ''To F.C. Cleary With Very Best Wishes / Ernest Hemingway''. Hemingway was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for this novel, about a soldier in the Spanish Civil War. Bound in oatmeal cloth boards with red print block to spine. Runs 471pp. Measures 6'' x 8.5''. Beneath the inscription, a discreet pencil notation reads ''12-17-40''. Toning to backstrip and endpapers with scratching to tail edge, else fine.
