In this scene by Garth Williams for ''Charlotte's Web,'' a determined Fern grabs the ax her father plans to use to kill the piglet runt, Wilbur. This preliminary pencil illustration for E.B. White's 1952 classic children's book is initialed ''GW'' in the lower left and numbered ''3.16337'' on the verso where Williams has sketched out another possible positioning of the two characters. This time, Fern, who is based on his own daughter, is in tears. The 8.5'' x 11'' drawing shows minor creasing, else near fine.
