Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter to his wife Mamie as a young military man and first-time father in September of 1917. His partially-typed partially handwritten letter is signed ''Your Devoted Lover'' and written from Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia: ''Dearest Sweetheart Darling - I am going to write this letter on the typewriter in order that you may have less trouble trying to read it. I received a letter from mother last evening and she said you had received no word from me...When I received mothers first telegram it was a day late on account of my being in the trenches...Mother told me what a brave girl you have been and said how proud she was of you. Why bless your heart, she isn't half as proud as I am. I certainly hope that you are getting better fast and that you soon may be able to run outside the house again. Mothers letter was full of glowing descriptions of the youngster, and believe me I am surely anxious to see the young rascal. She said the doctor was awfully proud of the boy. Merry wants to know the name of him and of course I couldn't tell him exactly. He thinks that it is a crime and that I am a poor sort of a father not to know the name of our only boy. I understand that Mr. Ike Jr. has my feet, hands, and shoulders. That must certainly take up the biggest part of him, for it certainly does of me. Just wait until I come home, if we don't have more fun with that boy than with a barrel full of monkeys, then I don't know a thing. Tell me, what does Dad think of the new arrival...Mother has been a peach. I am crazier about our muvver than ever. It is now time for Saturday morning inspection, and I must go and give the boys h---.'' He concludes the 1pp. letter in pen, in his hand, ''I'm sending you loads & loads of love and kisses. Then I'm sending some more for 'Ikey' and barrels more for Mother. Tell her I love her so much I'm going to break all her ribs when I come home. Your devoted Lover / 'You BET'''. Tragically their baby Doud Dwight Eisenhower would die four years later of scarlet fever. Single page letter measures 8'' x 10.5''. Toning and creasing, else near fine.
