Arthur Ashe's 1984 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life. Ashe's priorities are revealed through his brief but voluminous entries, which serve as reminders for his various public engagements and events of personal significance to him. In tennis, Ashe notes various worldwide match-ups, including Wimbledon, the Davis Cup, the U.S. Open and more. After retiring from tennis, he captained the U.S. Davis Cup for many years and here makes frequent notes regarding players, match-ups, meetings and media interviews. In Ashe's work as a social activist and educator, he writes notes to himself for a seminar he was speaking at: "Black Executive Seminar (New Orleans) 1. Holes in our entitlement 2. A pre-occupation with [?] & racism 3. High level of emotions close to surface --> anxiety / shut down <---> rage 4. Bring moral judgement to amoral issue". He records frequent media appearances, travel and various personal events, birthdays and the like. During the summer Olympics where he commentated for ABC, Ashe writes various notes to himself such as: "1. Be creative 2. Think American 3. Keep it short (2-4 mins)". Ashe also mentions Jesse Jackson, Julio Iglesias and Whoopi Goldberg. Several notations in Ashe's hand appear on most every page of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book, save for a a few days off the whole year. Features a brown faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". In very good condition, with mild toning throughout and wear to cover edges. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
