ALS from First Lieutenant John Mix of the 2nd U.S. Army Cavalry. Accompanied by cover. Datelined ''Washington D.C., Jany 11th 1863,'' Mix writes to his friend, the Quartermaster Sergeant of the 3rd New York Cavalry, in which regiment Mix had prior service. Excerpt: ''...I deeply regret that I was not able to see you in New York as I was in hopes of doing, having to leave without seeing you was one of the most painfull of many painfull things which I have lately been compelled to do. Are you satisfied with the action I took in your case, I hope so, for it was done with a view to your interest, perhaps some selfish feeling had a share in it also. For I confess I did not wish to see my old staff remaining under a man whom I detest, both morally, intelectualy & physically. I should much like to hear from you and the regt, my regt for they are still mine in heart. Write me all about them and yourself...'' Commissioned into the 3rd New York Cavalry on 21 September 1861, Mix resigned on 27 December 1862 and was re-commissioned into the 2nd U.S. Army Cavalry the same day. He was promoted to Captain of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry on 19 October 1865. Letter measures 5'' x 8'' and runs 2pp. Separation at center fold and scattered light soiling. Excellent condition.
