4pp. letter from Samuel W. Attmore of the 90th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company D, to his mother. Accompanied by cover. Written in pencil and datelined ''Washington April 20 [1862],'' letter reads in part: "...we got sudden order to march to york town and they said that our troop was geting lick we march right a way from washington and we march as far as the long Bridge that in Verginna and when we got as far as verginna the order come to march back to washing again and i tell we was all so mad we diden no wat to du with our selfel we thorght we was going to have a Bully fight but we misted we will get at them for long then we will show the gay Rebble what the nation guard can du...when we march to vergina it was up to our knee in mud and sick a time we had going thugh the mud and when we came Back we was mud from head to foot and it was a raining to and we got wet But that dont hurt no solder...you must excuse us tow for not writing sooner to you for this is first chance we had and now whil i am a writing theay are runing all over and we are all up side down i am a setting in a conner By my selfe a writing...'' Attmore mustered into Company D on 18 September 1861 and survived the war. The 90th Pennsylvania saw action at Cedar Mountain, Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness and Petersburg. Letter measures 5'' x 8''. Fine condition.
