4pp. letter from Sullivan S. Child of the 1st Pennsylvania Infantry, Company E. Datelined ''Harisburg June 11th 1861,'' Child writes while serving as Chief Clerk at the Mustering Office in Harrisburg. Excerpt: ''...I have been very busy making out muster rolls...done with the three month rolls but I expect to commence the three year rolls this week...Capt Simmons left here yesterday for Chambersburg to muster in some of the three month men for three years and I have charge of the mustering office here. I am Chief Clerk...Taylor left...and is now working for Joe Burkhart. I cannot say when we will get the steamer but I think it will be here soon...Thommy Lanyer belongs to a duncannon company. he is in camp here and he has an eagle for our company and as soon as they leave here he is going to give it to us...we will have a devil of a time a raising it...he says the Bummers are getting along fine. They are encamped about 4 miles out of Chambersburg. They expect to move on towards Harpers Ferry...we want you to get all the Relics you can...if you take any Secession Flag send it to us...'' The 1st Pennsylvania Infantry passed its three months' service near Baltimore guarding the Northern Central railroad, and at Catonsville, Maryland, guarding the roads leading to Harper's Ferry. Sullivan S. Child mustered into Company E on 18 April 1861 and mustered out on 27 July 1861. Ink letter measures 4'' x 8''. Some foxing, otherwise near fine condition.
