Two letters from Alfred A. Thomas of the 4th Independent Battalion Ohio Cavalry, Company E. Accompanied by one cover. First letter, datelined ''Richmond Ky Jan 22d 1864,'' reads in part: ''...The sick now all have bunks in one room of the Court House...I have a room to myself, having in it no one but one man, a sargeant who was formerly a lawyer in Bentonville...When I was in Co B I appeared to discover...my best friends...among these Ike Herman of Dayton...on the march we commenced bunking together...We shared everything we had together, cooked, rode, & slept together...We starved together...Major Wheeler is under arrest at Camp Nelson. The trouble is this. As we were coming back all along we met large droves of fresh, fine horses going to Knoxville...Our boys would when they got a chance take a very fine horse out of the drove & turn in their old hack. This did not decrease the number but...the quality of the horses...Wheeler was placed under arrest...supposed to have a hand in the matter...'' Second letter, datelined ''Richmond Jan 28th 1864,'' reads in part: ''...We left day before yesterday with an ambulance heavily loaded...arrived at the foot of Big Hill...on attempting to ascend the hill the ambulance stuck fast in the mud...two yoke of oxen...were unable to pull it up the hill. The hill is seventeen miles in length...100 negroes...working on it...have improved it very little...'' The 4th Independent Battalion Ohio Cavalry served in eastern Kentucky, guarding the citizens and the railroads from guerrillas. Alfred A. Thomas mustered into Company B on 3 August 1863, was transfered to Company E three months later, and mustered out on 12 March 1864. Ink letters measure 5'' x 8'' and total 9.5pp. Separation at creases, otherwise near fine condition.
