Extensive civil war autograph letter twice-signed, written by 98th New York infantryman Anthony McCollum on unique ''Muster Roll of Captain'' stationery. Signed boldly ''A.R. McCollum'' on each side of letter. Dated 28 May 1862, from Richmond, Virginia, letter reads in part, ''...I don't think there is much danger yet, but we are a fighting in every direction from us, and rebels all around us, but we lick them every time. Yesterday we had a fight and licked them, but don't now how many we kild...Today they gathered up about four hundred prisners to day and I expect a grate many more than that...fighting a goin on yesterday and some to day and more expicted to morrow and until rebledom is dead and peace is declared...rebles tried to slip out, but we caught them...and made them take the Virgina quick step with shells burting around their heads...Now I must close my leter. There so much excitement just now that I cant write. Our men are goin by with one hundred and five prisners, all Cesionist. I think that all along the line thy will take and kill one thousand to day and I expect a big fight to morow, for our renforsments have just arived and General Mclelen [McClellan] is here to day and General Stonman [Stoneman] and thousands of troops...'' Letter on one page, front and verso, measures 7.25'' x 19.5''. Toning and staining throughout with three small burn marks along vertical fold. Very good condition.
