ALS from Stephen W. Lowe of the 35th New York Infantry, Company K. Accompanied by cover. Datelined ''Falls Church Va. / Jan 20th 1862,'' Lowe writes of the infamous Confederate earthwork Fort Skedaddle located near Washington, D.C.: ''...The fort I spoke of is fort Sckedadle pronounced Skidadle with the flat sound on 'a'...My tentmates name is John Hass and I have one by the name of Henry J. Wright. The latter is from Philadelphia, N.Y. I would like to know how much you have to pay for paper there. I bought 10 quiras or 240 sheets such as this for 88 cents. I think it is cheap. The weather is rainy and it is very muddy here now but not cold we do not need much fire in our tent and we don't have to do any duty and guard duty and such like. you asked if Charles Bowers was an officer he is fourth sergeant of our company...'' Lowe mustered into Company K on 11 June 1861 and later died of fever. The 35th New York Infantry saw action at Cedar Mountain, Gainesville and Fredericksburg. 2pp. ink letter measures 5'' x 8''. Minor foxing, otherwise near fine condition.
