ALS from George W. Gellison of the 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, Company K. Accompanied by cover. Written in ink and datelined Fort Woodruff, Portsmouth, Virginia, 14 September 1864, letter reads in part: ''...I am not verry well at present I have had a severe attack of the Swamp Fever and do not feel over and above strong at the present time...I have no apetite at all for the army ration it is a poor thing for a sick man to live upon but we have to come over to it...I am better situated than some as there is only three of us in our tent and we have got a stove, so we do not mind it so mutch...we have a few sweet potatoes once in a while. they go good with our salt horse and...baked beans once a week. So if a fellow is well, it is not so bad to be a soldier, but I am in hopes that this Cruel War is almost over and we shall soon be home once more. Things look bright again...send me three dollars in green backs. I am in hopes I shall not have to write home for any more, but there is no sight of being paid for a month to come. We have been mustered for six months pay, but I do not know when we are to get it. It is rather hard for to work so long without money or change of diet...I must have something different...'' The 2nd Massachusetts saw action at the Siege of Plymouth and the Battle of Wyse Fork. 3pp. letter measures 5'' x 8''. Fine condition.
