4pp. letter from Edgar Atkins of the 1st Maine Cavalry. Accompanied by cover. Ink letter datelined ''Cav Corps Hospital / City Point Va Oct 6th 1864,'' reads in part: '''...I am very sorry that I am still obliged to address you from this point for it would be a great deal more in accordance with my wishes either to be able to join my company and regiment or be sent to a general hospital mostly from which I should be more likely to be sent home. But it is doubtful, very doubtful indeed to be sent forth. I am well now but my stomach is very much out of orders and I am convinced it will not get any better'...Our regiment, the 1st Maine is on duty to the left of Gen Mead and near the Danville rail-road, I belong Co G now instead of Co I, so please keep that in mind. Things now look like a very speedy termination of the war by the capture of Richmond by Butler and the annihilation of Lees army which is almost sure to follow'...There will probably be a desperate fight before the rebs give up. I can hear very heavy guns in the direction of Butler who commands right of the Appomattox'...'' The 1st Maine saw action at Middletown, Cedar Mountain, Fairfax Courthouse, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Brandy Station, Aldie, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Cold Harbor, Deep Bottom, Reams' Station, Boydton and Bellefield. Edgar Atkins mustered into Company G on 29 February 1864 and was discharged on 10 June 1865. Letter measures 5'' x 8''. Slight separation at folds, otherwise near fine condition.
