ALS from First Lieutenant Samuel P. Strahan of the 54th Indiana Infantry. Written in ink and datelined ''Camp Alice Miss June 28 1863,'' letter reads in part: '''...Enclosed I send you Gen McClearnand's letter to Gov. Yates of Illinois. From it you can get some little insight into the way Grant has treated our General and his Corps'...we had the advance nearly all the times and have lost more than any other corps. Military Jealousy has played thunder in nearly every Army'...Our boys blew up a fort on the 26th'...we must have killed a great many of them. There was a gun shot off in the 22nd Ky. just now'...Two men were fooling with their guns when one of them went off killing one man and wounding three others severely. I would Buck and Gagg one of my men quicker for fooling with their guns'...by fooling with their guns in camp every man's life is in danger!'...Joseph Mosier died last night about 2 o'clock. Poor Joe! He died in the Division Hospital!'...Me and Harrison Dille set up with him nights about for the past week I expect his folks will take it pretty hard. You had better take the letter over and let them know'...No more at present'...Samuel Strahan 1st Lietu Commding Cos G and K 54th Ind.'' Samuel P. Strahan was commissioned into service on 16 November 1862 and was mustered out on 8 December 1863 at New Orleans. The 54th Indiana fought at Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, Port Gibson and Vicksburg. During its single year of service, the regiment lost 2 officers and 44 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, and 2 officers and 222 enlisted men to disease. Letter measures approximately 8'' x 10''. Mild scattered soiling, edgewear and pinholes to creases. Excellent condition.
