4pp. ALS from Joseph Baer of the 39th Illinois Infantry, Company C. Written in ink and datelined ''Shanandoah Valley / May 5th 1863,'' letter reads in part: ''...we are in the valley between the Shanandoah Mountains and the blue ridge having cross the mountains some 3 weeks a go there is about 3000 of us here Banks with the main part of his Division has gone up the other valley after Jackson...last pay day I sent you 20 dollars also requested you send me some more stamps I Hant heard nothing from the money or you either since if you got it let me know and please send me som stamps for I cant get them here...as regards Capt Gray He does not exactly run away but it seems when there is a march up he gets sick and lets our First Lieutenant take command we are glad of it however for our 1st Lt is as fine a fellow as ever lived if there is danger he don't say go ahead boyes it is come on boys...we would all be glad if Capt would resign then we would have a commander that is worth something...the 1st Virginia Regt had a little Skirmish this morning with a party of rebels up the valley they lost one man killed and one wounded the rebel loss not known we may have a fight here in a few days...but we are ready for them...'' Joseph Baer mustered into Company C on 11 October 1861 and reenlisted on 1 Januarry 1864. He was wounded in action at an unknown engagement and died of his wounds on 28 May 1864. During his service, the regiment saw action at Swift Creek, Deep Bottom, Fair Oaks, New Market Heights, Hatcher's Run and Petersburg. Letter composed on patriotic letterhead of the Capitol building measuring approximately 8'' x 10''. Mild overall toning and foxing to first leaf. Large bites to top edges and center fold. Overall, very good condition.
