Letter from Charles H. Littlefield of the 21st Connecticut Infantry. Written in ink and datelined ''1864 / New Berne N.C. / Wednesday March the 4,'' letter reads in part: ''...Dear Wife...it is prity warm here today and thare are plenty of boys in the water today swimming and that is something we dount see at home this time of year thare aint much news here...James Younger is prity sick with inflammation in the bowels and they took him to the hospital the rest are prity well at presant...Today Mister Sanford has gone out in the woods today there is quite a large plantation out thare I went oute thare yesterday and see it. Thay toolk a niger out of the river today that was killed...You rote that you was not very well and I think that you had beter stay at home and rest for I did not enlist to have you go oute to worke for a living not by a dam site and when I want you to I will tell you of it then thare will be time enuff for it and if I was at home I would find enuff too for awhile I reckon to keep me in skin if I was as horney as I am now thare are not many white women oute here...in this city...'' Charles Littlefield mustered into Company K on 5 September 1862 and was discharged for disability on 11 February 1865. Before being discharged, Littlefield was engaged in battle at Fredericksburg, Suffolk, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. Letter measures 5'' x 8'' and runs 2.25pp. Fine condition.
