Lewis Foster's personally owned novel and screenplay of his Oscar-winning 1939 film ''Mr. Smith Goes to Washington''. Lot comprises two bound volumes: his novel titled, ''The Gentleman From Montana'' (for which he won the Academy Award), and its derivative screenplay, ''Mr. Smith Goes to Washington''. Foster was presented with an Oscar at the 12th annual Academy Awards ceremony in the category of Best Story for his tale of an honest man who becomes an overnight politician. Foster wrote ''The Gentleman From Montana'' and sold it unpublished to producers, who hired screenwriter Sidney Buchman to adapt it to the screen. Preeminent director Frank Capra directed Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur in the beloved motion picture. ''The Gentleman From Montana'' runs 158pp. and ''Mr. Smith Goes to Washington'' runs 192pp. Some leaves in ''Mr. Smith'' feature hand corrections to the text, likely by Foster. Both volumes are bound in burgundy cloth boards with gilt lettering, measuring 8.75'' x 11''. Toning to leaves and bumping to spine ends and board corners, else near fine.
