Large Civil Rights archive, belonging to the family of Gerry Reed, a white Civil Rights activist in Atlanta during the 1960s and a close friend of the King family, even serving as the King family dentist. After Martin Luther King's assassination, Reed went to the King's home and stayed with the children while Coretta Scott King flew to Memphis. Archive includes a lifetime of items collected by Reed, consigned by his daughter:
1) Rosa Parks twice-signed program for the Tenth Anniversary Banquet of The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, dated 14 August 1967. Signed by Parks on both the front and back in blue ballpoint. Measures 4.75'' x 7''. Several pinholes, not touching signatures, else near fine.
2-3) Two Christmas cards sent by the King family prior to Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, unsigned. Very good to near fine condition.
4-12) Nine cards (most Christmas cards) sent by the King family after Martin Luther King, Jr.'s passing, two signed by Coretta Scott King.
13) Coretta Scott King signed first edition of ''My Life With Martin Luther King, Jr.'', inscribed, ''To Elizabeth and Gerry Reed With deepest appreciation for your concern and support, and with warmest good wishes / Coretta Scott King''. Very good to near fine condition.
14) Martin Luther King, Sr. signed first edition of ''Daddy King'', inscribed, ''To Elizabeth in memory of Martin and Gerry, / M.L. King, Sr.'' Near fine.
15) Coretta Scott King signed first edition of the large softcover picture book, ''He had a Dream'', inscribed ''To Jan & Janice, accept 'He had a dream' as a token of my gratitude, for all of your support. Love, / Coretta King / 12-20-04''. Light wear, overall near fine.
16) Typed letter signed from Martin Luther King, Sr. dated 21 April 1977 to Janice Reed, sending condolences on the passing of her father Gerry Reed.
17) Printing of ''Letter From Birmingham City Jail'', a 15pp. pamphlet published May 1963 by the American Friends Service Committee.
18) Program from the ceremony of the unveiling of the portrait of Martin Luther King, Jr. on 17 February 1974.
19) Three original unpublished 10'' x 8'' glossy photos of Dr. King with Gerry Reed and others, and one additional later photo.
With numerous additional items, including vintage Civil Rights magazines and newspapers, some mentioning the work of Gerry Reed, who spearheaded the SCLC effort to secure jobs for African Americans. Other items include the book ''Open My Eyes, Open My Soul'' signed by Yolanda King, and the magazine article ''My Dream for My Children'' by Coretta Scott King. The author-signed book ''The Memoir of a White Civil Rights Activist'' is also included, which also mentions Mr. Reed. An outstanding lot of items from a close friend of the King family.
