John Tyler warrant signed as President, directing the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to ''a full power, and envelope of the letter of credence for Washington Irving as Minister of Spain.'' Datelined Washington, D.C., 22 March 1842. The ''Rip Van Winkle'' author was originally excited to serve as Minister to Spain, believing it would give him amble opportunity to write; however, upheaval in the country from the Carlist Wars left him disillusioned and eager to return to the United States. Single page measures 7.5'' x 9.25''. Some discoloration and mounting remnants to verso. Overall in very good condition with an uneven but bold signature.
