John Steinbeck autograph letter signed on how to make the perfect cup of coffee: with an egg. Steinbeck's famous egg/coffee recipe (told in ''Travels With Charley'') is outlined here in detail on this 5 September 1962 letter to a Mr. Fraser: ''...As far as I know the best way to make coffee is the oldest. Measure your water (cold water) in coffee cup, not measuring cup into a coffee pot, or with a tin can. Add a heaping tablespoon of good coffee for each cup and one for the pot. Put the egg shells...in the pot. Bring to a rolling boil as just before it bails over. Set aside and add a couple of spoons of cold water or a part of an ice cube. This will settle the grounds. Drink as is and don't reheat. If you want the coffee really to shine mix in the dry grounds the white of one egg before they are put in the cold water. This will give a wine like clarity but has no effect on flavor. Sometimes I add double the amount of coffee for pure glory...Yours / John Steinbeck''. Visible portion of letter measures 7.25'' x 9.5'', written on yellow lined paper which he used to write his manuscripts. Matted to a size of 15.5'' x 12.75''. Folds and light creasing, otherwise near fine condition. Perfect for framing in the kitchen.
