Handsome two volume set of ''A General Synopsis of Birds'' by ornithologist John Latham, who helped establish the Linnean Society in 1789. London: Benjamin White (for Leigh and Sotheby), 1783-1785. This is the first edition of Latham's classic work, four parts in two volumes II and III, missing the first volume. All 75 illustrated hand-colored plates are present, collectible in their own right. Thirty-six illustrations are contained in Vol. II and 39 in Vol. III, with volumes running 808pp. and 628pp. respectively. Both volumes in original publisher's bindings, rebacked with original leather bindings laid down. Books each measure 8'' x 10''. A beautiful set, with tissue guards present and no internal writing or library markings. Very good to near fine condition given age.
